Mental health therapy is a therapy provided by a licensed professional that fosters your personal growth and development and helps you achieve mental health, wellness, and life goals. It helps you cope with painful thoughts and emotions and challenges ineffective behaviors and beliefs. It encourages you to find effective ways to deal with situations beyond your control by building on your strengths and resources.

A therapy is useful any time you need help addressing problems and issues that cause you emotional distress or make you feel overwhelmed. The services of a mental health professional can help you address many challenging situations, including, but not limited to:

– anxiety, depression, and other mental and emotional disorders
– family and relationship issues
– emotional, physical, and sexual abuse
– addictive and/or damaging behaviors
– traumatic events
– life transitions
– professional stress
– the death of a loved one

Mental health professionals abide by strict codes of ethics and standards of practice that require them to protect the confidentiality of their communication with clients. Oregon law also requires licensed mental health professionals to protect the confidentiality of their clients.

As a client, you are guaranteed the protection of confidentiality within the limits of the client/counselor relationship. Any disclosure will be made with your full written, informed consent and will be to a specific time period.

There are, however, some limitations to this confidentiality. Mental health professionals are mandatory reporters which means they are required by law to report suspected abuse or neglect of children or vulnerable persons. They may also breach this confidentially if they believe that there is a clear and imminent danger to you or others. Finally, a judge may ask mental health professionals to produce their records, give a deposition or come to trial and testify.

Also, some health coverage plans cover mental health services by a mental health professional outside their network. We can provide you with a detailed superbill, which is an itemized receipt of payment, so that you can pursue reimbursement through your insurance provider. It may be helpful to check with your insurance provider to see if you have “out-of-network” benefits for mental/behavioral health. It is important to note that if you choose this option, your insurance provider will have access to your diagnosis.

Questions to ask include:
– Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health individual sessions?
– How much is the copay?
– Does my plan only cover a certain number of appointments?
– Is there a deductible? How much is it? How much have I used already? When does the deductible restart?
– Does my plan cover telehealth appointments?

Under the law, health care providers need to give clients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service, or at any time during treatment.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

Online therapy is a great option because it means no waiting and travel time, and you won’t have to take time off work or other priorities. Plus, it’s 100% HIPAA compliant and secure.

For a successful online therapy session, you need a space where you feel comfortable sharing intimate information. It is therefore important to set yourself comfortable in a room where you won’t be overheard, interrupted, or distracted. Limit background noise by closing doors and windows, turning off the television, and keeping loud pets in another room if possible. Make sure that the people who share your home are aware that you should not be disturbed.

You will need the following to join your online therapy session with your
provider:
– a computer, tablet, or phone (no applications or software download needed).
– an external or integrated webcam.
– an external or integrated microphone.
– an internet connection with a bandwidth of at least 10 MBPS.

Shut down all background applications to allocate the majority of your internet’s bandwidth to your therapy session.

During the first counseling session, you and your counselor establish your goals for the therapy and estimate the length of your treatment. Treatment length depends on the complexity of the problems you are facing, your history and characteristics, and your therapeutic progress. Ideally, the treatment ends when your goals are achieved. Some health care plans, however, limit the number of sessions for which they pay. We encourage you to check with your insurance company to obtain information about your coverage.
